Over a hundred artists worked
in “concert” to “harmonize”
their skills to help those made homeless by the hurricanes!
We decided to target New Orleans
Habitat for Humanity in particular because one of
the artists, Ashley Spencer, is from New Orleans and
her family and friends were personally touched by
the tragedy.
While the first choice of projects
might have been a home in New Orleans, the ongoing
rescue and rebuilding of public roads and services
made that impractical. Therefore the artists concentrated
on a creating a show/faux-house the DC area and a
church in Chicago. The DC showhouse was open to the
public and ticket sales raised over $30,000 for habitat.
The remainder of the funds needed to build the house
must come from private donations, sponsors and book
sales.
Once funded many of the artists
and volunteers will also go to New Orleans to work
on the Habitat house.
An international birdhouse painting contest ensured
any artists wishing to participate could do so, and
we felt it important to remember the animals made
homeless by the hurricanes. 100% of proceeds from
auctioning the birdhouses will go to Noah’s
Wish. The winning birdhouse goes with the Habitat
House so the people and the birds get a new home.
It is also our hope that this project/book
will increase public awareness of ways to beautify
their own homes. There have been incredible advances
in faux and decorative painting since the sponging/ragging
fad of the 90’s. Ideas from the book may be
copied and expanded upon by homeowners, serving as
a catalyst for ideas and further advancements in decorative
painting.
